Improved warehouse connectivity and device reliability, increased operational efficiency, enhanced cybersecurity posture, reduced downtime, and a scalable infrastructure foundation to support future growth and automation

About the Client The client is a fast-growing regional distribution and warehousing organization responsible for managing high-volume inventory movement, fulfillment operations, and logistics coordination across multiple facilities. Their day-to-day operations relied heavily on wireless handheld scanners, VoIP communications, shipping systems, and real-time inventory tracking.

As operational demands increased, the organization’s existing network infrastructure struggled to keep pace. Legacy switches, aging firewalls, inconsistent wireless access point placement, and outdated cabling contributed to frequent connectivity issues, warehouse dead zones, and limited network visibility. These challenges began impacting productivity, order accuracy, and overall operational reliability.

Without a modernized infrastructure strategy, the organization faced increasing risks related to downtime, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and the inability to scale technology to support future warehouse automation initiatives. The Challenge

The distribution center’s existing IT infrastructure had evolved over time without a centralized modernization plan. As more connected devices and cloud-based applications were introduced into the environment, the network became increasingly difficult to manage and maintain.

Key operational challenges included:

  • Frequent wireless connectivity interruptions for handheld scanners and mobile warehouse devices

  • Inconsistent Wi-Fi coverage throughout warehouse aisles and loading dock areas

  • Aging network switches approaching end-of-life and lacking performance capacity

  • Limited segmentation between operational technology and business systems

  • Outdated firewall hardware with insufficient visibility and security controls

  • Legacy cabling infrastructure causing intermittent connectivity and troubleshooting difficulties

  • Minimal proactive monitoring and reactive issue resolution

  • Increasing cybersecurity concerns as operations became more connected and cloud-dependent

These infrastructure limitations resulted in workflow disruptions, reduced employee efficiency, delayed shipments, and elevated operational risk. The Solution

A comprehensive infrastructure modernization initiative was developed to stabilize operations, improve performance, and create a scalable technology foundation for future growth.

The project included:

  1. Network Infrastructure Modernization

The organization’s legacy switching environment was replaced with enterprise-grade managed switches designed to support higher throughput, improved redundancy, and centralized management capabilities. Network segmentation was implemented to separate warehouse operations, administrative systems, guest access, and critical business applications.

This modernization improved reliability, reduced network bottlenecks, and established a more secure and manageable infrastructure environment.

  2. Wireless Network Redesign

A full wireless site assessment was conducted throughout the warehouse and distribution facility to identify coverage gaps, signal interference, and high-density operational areas.

New enterprise wireless access points were strategically deployed to deliver consistent connectivity across warehouse aisles, inventory staging zones, loading docks, shipping areas, and office spaces. The redesigned wireless environment significantly improved the reliability of handheld scanners, mobile workstations, tablets, and VoIP devices used throughout daily operations.

  3. Firewall & Cybersecurity Enhancements

The client’s legacy firewall platform was replaced with a next-generation firewall solution providing advanced threat protection, traffic visibility, VPN capabilities, and improved access control.

    Additional cybersecurity improvements included:

    • Network segmentation and secure VLAN design

    • Enhanced remote access security

    • Proactive threat monitoring and alerting

    • Secure wireless authentication policies

    • Improved patching and firmware management procedures

These enhancements strengthened the organization’s security posture while improving overall network performance and visibility.

  4. Structured Cabling Upgrades

Outdated and inconsistent cabling infrastructure was replaced with professionally organized structured cabling to improve reliability, simplify troubleshooting, and support higher network speeds.

The upgraded cabling infrastructure also prepared the facility for future expansion, including additional wireless devices, automation systems, security cameras, and operational technology integrations.

  5. Ongoing Monitoring & IT Support

Following implementation, proactive monitoring and ongoing infrastructure management services were introduced to provide:

    • 24/7 monitoring of critical network infrastructure

    • Firmware and security update management

    • Performance monitoring and reporting

    • Rapid issue identification and remediation

    • Strategic infrastructure planning and lifecycle management

This proactive support model helped reduce downtime and ensured the environment remained stable, secure, and scalable.

The Results

Following the infrastructure revitalization project, the distribution center experienced immediate operational and performance improvements across the organization.

Key outcomes included:

  • Reliable wireless connectivity for warehouse personnel and mobile devices

  • Reduced downtime and operational disruptions

  • Improved speed and responsiveness of warehouse management systems and cloud applications

  • Enhanced visibility into network performance and security events

  • Faster troubleshooting and issue resolution

  • Increased employee productivity and workflow efficiency

  • Stronger cybersecurity protections and reduced operational risk

  • Scalable infrastructure capable of supporting future warehouse automation and expansion initiatives

By modernizing its internal network infrastructure, the organization transformed technology from a recurring operational challenge into a strategic asset that supported efficiency, reliability, and long-term growth.
